Mon-AM: :22, 500' ~ Amphitheater
Hiked to the top of the Amphitheater trail at the base of Green before deciding that the shin was too tight and that tagging the summit would be a bad idea.

Tue-AM: 1:14, 2500' ~ Green Mt.
Up and down 1st Saddle. Shin felt quite a bit better this morning, especially as the hike went on.
PM: 1:19, 2600' ~ Green Mt.
Up 3rd access and down 1st Saddle. Incredibly warm afternoon. All hiking.
1-11-2012
Wed-AM: 1:08, 2500' ~ Green Mt.
Up and down 1st Saddle. At the Gregory TH by 5:15am when it was already lightly flaking. Needed the headlamp all the way back down the mountain as the falling snow seemed to be suppressing any sort of sunrise. My bus to DIA was delayed by 1h30 due to an accident on 270 so I had to catch a later flight to Charlotte where there ended up being tornadoes that evening. In January. Long day, but really glad I got the summit in to start it off.

Thu - off.
Spent the day in Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Durham, giving a talk at the Carrboro Fleet Feet in the evening. No exercise today, but really fun to see a new corner of the country. Really liked the vibe in Carrboro and would like to do Uhwarrie or Mt. Mitchell one of these years.

Fri-PM: 1:21, 2500' ~ Green Mt.
Got out in the late evening after a long day of travel back from North Carolina. Shin was more sore than I would've liked, even just hiking. WTF.
1-14-2012
Sat - off.
Just seemed stupid to do anything since the shin is hurting.

Mon-AM: 1:18, 2500' ~ Green Mt.
Up and down First Saddle. Felt crappy after the time off.
1-17-2012
Tue-AM: 1:16, 2500' ~ Green Mt.
Up and down First Saddle. Cold morning at +10F. Warmed up nicely later, though.
PM: 0:13 ~ Streets
Tested the shin with a little flat jogging. Meh.
1-18-2012
Wed-AM: 1:43, 2800' ~ Green Mt.
Up Third access and down First Saddle. Jogged to Chautauqua and then the first couple minutes up the meadow. Status quo blah.
1-19-2012
Thu-AM: 1:36, 2800' ~ Green Mt.
Up and down First Saddle. Ran the 13min to Gregory. Shin twingier than I would've liked, but I'm used to disappointment after a year of this shit. +60F today, which is awesome but feels wrong.
1-20-2012
Fri-AM: 1:18, 2600' ~ Green Mt.
Up 3rd access, down 1st/2nd access. More warm weather. Short-sleeved shirt. All hiking.
1-21-2012
Sat-AM: 1:20, 2600' ~ Green Mt.
Up 3rd, access down 1st/2nd. Another unseasonably warm day.
PM: 1:13, 2600' ~ Green Mt.
Up and down 3rd access. Felt really dialed in and tagged a 38min ascent from Chat. Shin felt really solid on the down, and on such steep terrain it's tough not to sneak in a few running-type steps. Finished just as a headlamp would've become helpful. Perfect timing.
1-22-2012
Sun-AM: 1:33, 2800' ~ Green Mt.
Up and down 3rd access. Tested out a little running today, and it went pretty well. My guiding principle now will be to do nothing that I don't think I can repeat the next day.
PM: 1:15, 2600' ~ Green Mt.
Up and down Third access. All hiking but shin felt quite good. Really enjoying getting out again.

I'm bored of whining, so won't. But there did seem to be a legitimate glimmer of hope at the end of a really tough two-week stretch with the shin.
- Wait, one thing I will whine about: posing as someone else on the Internet is pretty lame, bordering on douchie. Equal parts flattering and annoying, I suppose. For the record, "Anton's Ghost" on Twitter is not me in case there was any confusion about that (and there actually seems to be).
- Tickets for the February 9th Boulder screening of Unbreakable were sold out as of a couple days ago. Sounds like there may be a couple of extra guests, so expect it to be the sort of trail/mountain/ultra gathering typical of the Boulder scene, i.e. more top mountain runners and other assorted legends anywhere else other than maybe Placer High on a late June evening.
Hey Anton! I've been following your blog for quite some time and am an aspiring ultra-runner myself. I'm wondering if what would be best for you and your shin/injuries would be to take some time off cold turkey for 6 - 8 weeks. I know how hard that is psychologically to handle, but in the end it might be better then only being able to half-train for months on end like it seems you've been doing. Everyone knows your potential as a world-class ultra-runner, and I'm wondering if suffering for 2 months doing nothing will do a lot better for you in the long run. All the best man, I hope you kick ass in 2012 and take down some course records!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe now it is time for cushion and some extra under your heels. I can not see the point why you are teasing sore shine continual. Training should be constructive...
ReplyDeleteI hope you know WHY the shin is sore or tight. What causes this trouble I mean. I hope sport medical specialists could help you.
All the best and with respect, pasi
1. I had some Journey and Krokus all ready to go, but Tony delivered the goods.
ReplyDelete2. Runners love Lydiard, but they overlook the strength training of Cerutty. The result is that they are Indy cars that are light and fast but disintegrate on contact. Strength training turns runners into stock cars that can handle the abuse. I think a blend of Lydiard and Cerutty is the best way to go.
Tony,
ReplyDeleteThis is completely irrelevant to your post, but I’m just curious how many miles you typically get on a pair of 110’s on Boulder trails before retiring them? I just made the transition from 101’s to 110’s earlier this month and I’m wondering how many miles to expect. I’ve been able to get about 500-750 miles out of 101’s in the past.
Thanks,
Kendrick
It was great to meet you in Carrboro Tony. Drop me a line in the future if you happen to be in the area. Would be happy to coordinate a run or two, ideally at Mitchell.
ReplyDeleteGood to see what Joe Grant does in his free time... apparently he's the dude with the white guitar in Grouplove! :)
ReplyDeleteBest of luck in 2012.
I know it won't help you any, but seeing you struggle with your injury, being impatient at times, pushing, aching, backing off, pushing again...and not giving up (despite whining) gives me a lot of help with my own path of the last 7 months-dragging injury. At least you have a benefit of having mountains in your backyard, which you can hike - or, on the worst days of all, look at. Hang on, Tony. Don't stop writing. Don't even stop whining. We do relate.
ReplyDeleteYou can report Anton's Ghost to Twitter and they'll remove the account. Details here: https://support.twitter.com/articles/18366-impersonation-policy
ReplyDeleteAnton: I know I sound like a broken record but there's something obviously very wrong in the shin. Maybe it's a nasty case of post-tib tendonitis that won't go away, or maybe it's compartment syndrome, or maybe it's something else. Has a specialist (e.g., a sports medicine specialist) looked it over? Have you tried traditional physical therapy, such as ultrasound therapy, iontophoresis, etc.?

Glad to see you gave Grouplove a listen... at this point I'm finally burned out on them, but not before I listed to the album straight through approximately 237,449 times.
ReplyDeleteHappy to see a post. It must be tough to stay patient through all of this but, I have no doubt you will come back strong. Hope the injury shakes off soon.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the passion of the singer for Future Islands. Awesome. Intense.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the new Dr Dog single "That Old Black Hole" if you haven't already. Great tune. New album out Feb 7th.
ReplyDeletekeep the faith
ReplyDeleteBRAVO... to you sir, for such an interesting and diverse race schedule! Heres to your health and strong legs carrying you through.
ReplyDeleteAnton,
ReplyDeleteSorry to continue reading of the troublesome shin. Your shin makes my shin hurt. I was listening to the new music you posted, which was really nice, and I had a thought. You should do a mix tape. Maybe monthly or quarterly? You put out a list of tunes and all the newbs (myself included) can get an nice musical education as we cruise around town listening to your selection. Just a thought!
I hope the best for you and your shin... as for me, rather you race or not it is still a joy to follow your thoughts and tunes.
Bummer about the ongoing tibialis posterior tendon issue. Just curious if all the therapeutic measures had been exhausted. Apart from load management, pharmacological intervention can sometimes influence connective tissue regeneration/destruction. A 'triple therapy' of oxycycline, ibuprofen and green tea had been used to manage tendinopathy. Not going to bore everyone with the details which Wiki can help. Perhaps a good sports physician could help there too.
ReplyDeleteCheers
TK,
ReplyDeleteGreat post like always. Hoping the shin annoyance is a thing of the past soon.
Thanks for the mention in your running times article. Your passion in running sparks it in others. Fun to watch you inspire so many including myself.
Looking forward to going on a long run with you one of these days.
Be free,
Timothy
