Miwok 100K Race Report

I posted my race report for Miwok over at Running Times.  So, go ahead and click here to see it.

Also, Jim from Hydrapak was industrious enough to take some fairly intimate footage of some of the back-and-forth that Mike Wardian and I engaged in for the first 35 miles of the race.  Check it out:

  2. The RSS feed for the running times blog is not immediately obvious - not that I could tell, anyway. I poked around a bit and found this:

  3. Happy for you Tony. Can't wait to see Western in person - that's gonna be a show!

Any low spots on the day? Or were you solid all day?

  4. Scott,
Eh, lots of low spots. It wasn't a great race, actually. As you know the last couple miles are straight down so it's pretty easy to finish feeling strong, but I really only felt like things were clicking well from Randall back to Pantoll (~mile 35 to mile 50). Everything else was pretty average to below average. Just not a real "on" day.

  5. Well done, Anton! Hope you recover quickly and race again soon. Can't wait to see what happens on a good day.

  6. Congrats Tony on your win!

  7. Man, that video will be one to bring out of the trunk when you are 50. What a test of will. You may have had your "lows", but you also showed your mettle when it counted. Good luck in recovery. -craig

  8. Good read. Glad you are back to competitive running and feeling healthy. Looking forward to hearing about WS and perhaps running into you at LT100.

  9. Strong running out there Tony! I woke up and started tracking the race online and it was interesting to see you and Mike going back and forth (cool to see on video too!) and then Joe G. and I went for a run and hypothesized about what was going to be the status of the race when we returned. Needless to say we returned to you kicking it into gear, like you said, miles 35-50, and at the lunch table we got the "tweet" that you won! Hope you keep rollin' this year...Congrats!

  10. Congrats. Nice to see you back on form. Seems the tempering at Leadville was a good thing.

  11. Congrats man. It was nice to finally get a chance to see you out there running after being a reader of your blog for some time now. I posted some pics I took during the race if you are interested. The ones in the woods are about 1 mile after pantoll the second time around, and are out of focus cause you popped out of nowhere :)

  12. Tony, you mention your watch and checking out distance and elevation... what watch are you using these days? Congrats on the race. I geeked out a bit and couldn't help cheer you on as you passed me through Bolinas Ridge. I think your 20 miles head of me at that point?

  13. Congrats! I was following the Miwok100k twitter feed, so I felt like I was a little in touch with your progress.

I know you feel like it wasn't your best race ever, but a win is a good way to start the season!

  14. That was the first event I ever followed on twitter and was really into it. I was fixated on my iPhone until the top women finished.

  15. Anton - Splendid result !! The 2nd fastest time ever for the course (and missing the first by just a few minutes) is something that I am sure you would be proud of, even if the race itself might not have been the "best" you could have run.

Read on the Miwok site that Zach veered off course, else that would have added a nice touch to the tango with Mike.

While you soak in this win, and get some well deserved rest, cant help but ask - are you running the WS100?

  17. I have lost nearly all respect for you: how can you not like espresso love GUs????

  18. I told my friend (who was running Miwok too) that I predicted you would win and I was right. Her response to me was "you think?".

Evidently I'm not the only one who thought this.

    Congratulations on another impressive win.

    All the best,

    Ron

  19. Tony, which shoes were you wearing? NB 904's?

  20. Shaner-
    Nice photos!

    Ted-
The watch I wear is a Highgear Axio Max. It doesn't have GPS, just a barometric altimeter, which I find to be pretty helpful sometimes in the mountains when I'm wondering how much farther to the top.

    Michael-
I was wearing a pair of the New Balance 790s with the heel slightly shaved down.

  21. Tony:

Based on your RR it appears you may have misjudged your water intake requirements a couple of times. Obviously this could be a huge issue at WS and one would expect Hal's one advantage compared to you and Geoff would be prior experience in dealing with WS heat. Have you ran many races in the heat and/or do you have any heat training planned for WS?

Not trying to be negative, I just think the heat in the canyons could be a big wildcard.

Congrats on the Miwok win and if you ever want to do a 100k with lots of terrain variety then you need to give Bandera a try.

  22. Anton. Congratulations on the wise, positive, I'm sure confidence-building performance. You are back and with a win. It must feel fantastic.

I must say, reading the blog on runningtimes wasn't the same as reading directly from your blog. There's something evidently more "you" about reading your writings here. Ah, and the font is easier on the eyes as well. But you know what? I'm thankful for the gift of your talented storytelling wherever I can get it.

Have you see the photo on ultralive.net where it looks like the heels of your shoes were shaved off? Do you really still modify your shoes? Fascinating.

  23. Your response about the shoes wasn't showing up when I posted my question. I see; still shaving a little heel. Love it.

  24. I'm a regular reader of your blog, and you've partly inspired me to push into ultra distances. Know that there's a lot of us out here in the mess of the intrawebs who appreciate each and every post. Thanks.

  25. Looks like you are rocking 6 min pace through the aid station! What is your total time spent at stations? 2 minutes or less? Crazy awesome running! That video really gives perspective on your speed and natural gait. Congrats!

  26. Congratulations Anton ! When will you run the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc in France and win it ! If you will come to do it that's great !

  27. Congrats on the strong finish and victory. We're all looking forward to WS.

  28. Congratulations, you won it on "not a real "on" day." Nothin' wrong with that.

  29. Congrats on your race, must be hard to be in the lead by that much and still keep the pace up.
Wanna run the Okoboji Marathon with me this year? Wasn't that your first? It was my first also, although it was only last year!
I'm from a little town in Iowa not far from your hometown.

Congrats again, keep it up, you're an inspiration!
