Geoff Roes Video

Joel Wolpert has produced another video clip on a top ultrarunner--this time Geoff Roes--that does a fantastic job of portraying the subject and the surroundings in a vivid, authentic manner.  Joel worked with me for a couple days last November--so I can vouch for his laid-back and unassuming demeanor--but with really no more than a steadi-cam and a tripod he's showing that it's possible to create compelling and insightful trail running media without helicopters and tens of thousands of dollars.  I don't know about you, but I find this video inspiring:

Knee Update
My visits with the doctor last week went relatively well--or as well as could be expected, given the circumstances--and I won't be needing any kind of surgery on my crippled right knee.  The CT scan came back negative for any kind of tibial plateau fracture--huge relief there--and the MRI showed no significant damage to any of the crucial stablizing ligaments in the knee (ACL, PCL, medial/lateral collateral ligaments).  I did however, bruise my meniscus and bone bruise the head of the femur in addition to tearing my soleus, the knee capsule, and a more minor ligament in the back of my knee.  But, with the broken fibula requiring ~8 weeks of inactivity anyways, these things should end up healing just fine on their own at the same time.  I'd like to thank everyone for all the concerned/sympathetic phone calls, emails, and blog comments I've gotten since I hurt myself. And also for the countless baked goods, visits and car rides. You know who you are. I'm fortunate to have such a support group and I don't underestimate the effect that has in helping the healing process.

In the meantime, I'm trying not to get too frustrated with my crutches, and I'm looking forward to being able to ease back into running about the same time as Geoff moves back to the Boulder area at the end of the summer.  Although I'm obviously super bummed we won't be running the Western States Trail together again next weekend, I definitely look forward to sharing some more miles with him this fall.

Just mentioned both of you guys in my blog (www.pablovega.com) for another reason... get well soon and keep inspiring us as Geoff also does...

Hope your recovery goes well! I've spent a good bit of time on crutches (almost a year total), so I can relate. One thing that makes the crutches more fun, is to learn some tricks (just be careful with your leg). My favorite was to walk around on just the crutches (both feet in the air). Good upper body workout and fun too.

Anton: That is a great news about your leg, all things considered. Like many, when I saw the x-ray I was concerned. It's great to know that you'll be back and better than ever. You are a real ambassador of the sport. Enjoy your summer and may you hit the trails sooner rather than later.

FYI, wrote a little tribute about on your my blog at http://nolimitsever.blogspot.com/2011/06/wishing-anton-krupicka-all-best.html.

Tony,

I broke my leg as a kid and was in a wheelchair and then crutches for several months. No worries, though - came back and had a fantastic soccer season the very next fall. Keep your mood positive and you should do great!

On the crutches, be careful in the grocery store. You'll get pretty good at moving fast on them. But when you hit water on that slick floor, you can wreck pretty good.

Hi Anton,

I hope you heal up soon. Very inspiring blog.
I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions about ultra belt buckles. Thanks

just to be clear, i don't think kilian should be faulted for the unprecedented marketing campaign salomon has conferred upon him. he's making a living running, is without a doubt one of the top mountain runners in the world with fantastic talent and range, and is an all-around great dude with the right attitude towards running and mountains, in my estimation.

i actually have really enjoyed almost all of the kilian's quest videos, too, and think they're great for the sport. the last couple, however, have been a little too...hmmm...inauthentic and hyperbolic, maybe? having said that, i absolutely applaud salomon for trying to market the sport to the masses. i don't want your quoted sentence to be perceived as salomon-bashing because it's not. i'm just happy to see a little more grass-roots (but still polished) media out there covering the sport, too. kilian's approach to the mountains is right on (i would argue that his mountainsport philosophy is very similar to geoff's and mine) and definitely lends itself just as well to a less sensationalized medium.

Hey Anton, I am interested in going to University of Colorado Boulder, but in Nashville, TN. Was wondering if you went there, after hearing you moved from Nebraska to colorado for college. Obviously the running is great. Could you email me at jon.edwards9@yahoo.com

Anton said...

Jon--No, I went to Colorado College, a small liberal arts school in Colorado Springs, for my undergrad studies. Fantastic running there, too.

Jon Edwards said...

Oh, thanks Anton. I am looking for great trail cities, I have had access to the Warner parks in Nashville, which are like mountains in the city, once you've started trail running, road running doesn't compare. I'm looking at appalachian state, in the blue ridge mountains also. Thanks for the help though.

Nice video.
I don't like most modern high-end videos. Too much editing--switching back and forth too fast, etc.
I don't have ADD.

Heal well, and thanks for showing me what's possible.

As a video person I was just contemplating the best way to do videos running. Love this video. Thanks for sharing. I was using some gopro cameras for a job so I took one out for a run...a bit too choppy and mostly did it to show my family where I am going. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1U9mFxtOD8

Hope your recovery goes quickly.

Hey Tony. Great video of Geoff, thanks for posting it. Good to hear that the damage to the knee is not that extensive. Bones heal fast, ligaments do NOT! you'll be up and running in no time. If I can help, drop me a line. all the best.

sounds like mostly good news about the knee. hope you heal up well cause i'm hoping to get tons of cool runs in the Indian Peaks in September/October and i want you out there for as many of them as possible. will miss you in CA this week.

As much as it sucks being stuck inactive, it's for the best. Sadly, the good old Army never let my injuries (including a break and ligament tears in my ankle) heal thanks to tours overseas, and I've had issues ever since. On the bright side, when I got out and let myself heal, I was back stronger. I still battle with residual problems from time to time (rolls and sprains), but its much better since my enlistment was up :0) Like a previous commenter said...learning tricks on crutches kept me entertained!

Good luck to you...I look forward to following your journey!

First of all, the Diagnosis doesn't look so bad as the X-Ray, but dude you heal good and get them again!

The Video was fun watching, thanks for sharing, esp the bloopers where Joel lands on his @$$ but saves the camera...hahaa, sounds familiar to me, as I have done that at least on 2 occasions!
Also, I agree with Geoff, on his porcupine encounters, I mean everyone has to deal with similar situations all the time, if we love to explore, there is a very steep trail I love to run & at times I find little snakes on the corners or turns, but hey we gotta respect them, its there home we are exploring so I just wait for them to leave & sometimes just walk by quietly without bothering them!
I agree Salomon is doing awesome job with Kilian for the sports!

fritz34 said...

Anton,

I really agree the fact that Kilian is a great person who really enjoy this sport. He's maybe the biggest mountain lover in the world, he's kind and love sharing his experiences. His attitude and his quest are important te promote ultra trail which is a good thing.

Anyway, despite I enjoyed many Kilian's Quest episodes (just like you did), I don't like what Salomon do!
Breaking record just for breaking records is not a good thing (just my opinion). Some people can say: records are made for being broken: yeah I agree but not at this price. What does it means? a crew of 25 people (coaches, medics...communication guys)... It's not my vision of outdoor sports. Yeah ok, it's great to show the world the beauty of the landscapes, the talent of this very good athletes but where will this stop? Helicopters don't have to turn around peaks exept for helping injured hikers. I'm sure I'm not alone to have this opinion.
As I already said: I really like Kilian as a runner, skier and human. Like you said, we definitely shouldn't faulted him for this omnipresent marketing campaign...

Respect to you Anton, I am not an ultra trail runner but still I am a trail runner and even still a runner ;-) Point is I know how difficult it is to stay off the beaten track and sit back while your buds carry on, so like a say all respect to you and best wishes to heal fast!!

Anton,

Sorry to read about your injury. I'm always paranoid about that kinda thing and i hope it heals quick as it can with no bad after affects. But if you got some time and need something to read besides deeply impressive college books, you have inspired my son to also start a running blog. I run quite a bit and he has taken a love to it as well (which is awesome) and i follow your blog. He's seen me reading it on a regular basis and decided his goal this summer is to run at least a mile every day and to blog about it. He is 5 yrs old, so this is far more running ambition i ever had at that age outside of hide and go seek. We also just caught "Indulgence" on NBC Universal and he enjoyed that a lot as well. If you decide to check out his blog every once in a while that would be awesome. Either way we are both big fans and hope you get well soon.

That video is fantastic. I admire the way Geoff has such a sensitivity for his surroundings, I'm sure the porcupines are grateful. Also, working to strengthen his weaknesses to help endure hardships I think is just one of those good life lessons. I liked 'The Runner in Winter' short film. Joel Wolpert chooses suitable music too. Thanks for sharing.

Good to hear the positive news that there's no ACL, PCL, etc damage, and no need for surgery! I know you'll take excellent care of yourself and heal strong and fast.
You're not only an inspirational runner, but such a great attitude in general - even when injured and temporarily out of the game... you continue to inspire others!
You and Geoff seem like you would be great running buddies and friends, seems that you both share a similar philosophy about running and training. You're both awesome!!

Are you taking any summer classes? Seems like this would be a great opportunity to get ahead in your grad studies. :)

Good luck with your recovery. You have youth and being very fit on your side and though it's quite a setback I'm sure you'll get back to it.

I caught a root or rock during a trail ultra back in March. I was able to finish the race but found out during meniscus surgery, yes I was awake, that I had cracked the cartilage on the femur as well as tearing the meniscus. I only spent 4 weeks on crutches. I found the first couple of weeks quite challenging but eventually got used to them.

Jon Edwards said...

Hey Anton, I recently stumbled upon this ultra while searching for what would be my first ultra, this will not be a candidate, but you should look into it. Barkley Marathons 100 mile.

Get this:

"Since the race began in 1986, only 4 runners out of 500 have finished within the 60 hour cutoff. Mark Williams of the UK finished first in 1995 in 59:28. Here is his race report. In 2001, after several failed attempts, Blake Wood, 42, NM, and David Horton, 50, VA, finished together in 58:21, only to be disqualified for inadvertently leaving the course to follow a parallel route for about 200 yards. This route (on the south side of the stream instead of the north side) has slightly better footing and had been the normal route until 2000."

This would be my goal... someday.

Very interesting interview, thanks for sharing. I found your interviews on the internet and you and your colleague runner, Geoff, have very interesting points of view regarding running in genre.
Running is a hobby for me, and i love the sense of focus and freedom that it gives; it's also like somekind of exorcism :P Besides, it's very handy, you just jump in your shoes whenever you feel like it, and get out in nature.

Get healty soon! :)

I too am on crutches for the summer, and am an avid athlete. I just wanted to drop by and say a) I'm so sorry and I feel your pain (I was training to run my first 50K at Big horn and broke 3 metatarsals in my foot), I know you'e got a lot of advice and support coming your way but I wanted to make a couple of recommendations: a) pilates I've been doing pilates and yoga every day to keep up core strength and my mood and b) talk to an herbalist/accupuncturist/ naturopath. there are so many herbal remodies out there that are helpful with healing. Arnica salve and comfrey are stars. also tumeric is great for encouraging tissue to heal. Best of luck with healing and Happy crutching... at least we live in beautiful colorado with such amazing fall weather.
